As she peeks her head into the performance hall from backstage to watch a throng of octogenarians shuffle slowly to their seats, 10-year-old Alana Kyser cannot help but begin her performance a few minutes early. “Oh, oh, oh, it’s magic!” the Dufrocq fourth-grader sings, bobbing so the maroon beads and small white plastic bows in her dark braids shake. “That song is so old!” Daylon Daniel, a fourth-grader at LSU Lab, says, ribbing his friend behind a wide smile. “I know,” Kyser says. “But I like it.” It’s late afternoon on a frigid December Saturday for the Kids’ Orchestra’s First Annual Winter Concert, the culmination of the innovative new after-school program’s first semester of combining elementary students from several area schools into a single musical entity featuring recorders, violins and percussion. Kids’ Orchestra names artistic director, program manager

(Baton Rouge)—The latest additions to the new Kids’ Orchestra staff look forward to fostering promising futures for youth in the Baton Rouge area through music. Kids’ Orchestra has named Raul Gomez as Artistic Director and Eliza Eaton as Project Director. A conductor, violinist, composer and teacher, Gomez is completing his DMA in conducting at Louisiana State University (LSU). Eaton, a violist who is formerly of Teach for America, has worked with the United Nations World Food Program, Rotary International Youth Exchange and the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis. “I am so excited about our five fabulous schools for our inaugural year, Capitol Elementary, The Dunham School, Lanier Elementary, LSU Laboratory School and Melrose Elementary,” Kids’ Orchestra Founder and Board Chair Nanette Noland said. “My dream of providing an excellent staff is coming together and I am delighted that our Kids’ Orchestras are already booked for Christmas events.” For release: June 1,

New Kids’ Orchestra Brings Children Together

(Baton Rouge)—There will be new sounds from children playing together in Baton Rouge this fall.  These sounds will be music from Kids’ Orchestra, the new after-school program for kindergarten through fifth grade students. Supporters organizing Kids’ Orchestra are focused on harmony beyond the notes of the musical instruments the young people will play. “Kids’ Orchestra will bring together kids from different schools and neighborhoods of Baton Rouge to interact and work side-by-side as a group studying music, learning to play instruments, and eventually performing as an orchestra,” Gwen Jones, Kids’ Orchestra Executive Director, explained.
