The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) defines Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) as an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.
Kids’ Orchestra recognizes that social and emotional learning (SEL) happens when young people and adults develop emotionally and mentally in a safe, inclusive, culturally responsive, and equitable learning environment. We encourage students to set their own musical goals, build community, develop relationship skills, and understand the power of music for social growth. KO is excited to implement the Second Step® Out-of-School Time curriculum with our staff at select sites. This curriculum incorporates fun 20-minute lessons to engage students in activities and conversations to help them understand themselves, their community and teachers. We believe that opportunities, such as being a responsible decision-maker, learning how to be prepared, and understanding your relationship to an instrument, are all discovered in music education.
SEL advances educational equity and excellence through authentic school-family-community partnerships to establish learning environments and experiences that feature trusting and collaborative relationships, rigorous and meaningful curriculum and instruction, and ongoing evaluation. SEL can help address various forms of inequity and empower young people and adults to co-create thriving schools and contribute to safe, healthy, and just communities.
SEL lessons are offered at all of our EBR sites and as an option at content provider sites.
